2024.02.03 Boca Fala Tropa Gio Lourenço

From a body spanning various times and based on the movements of Kuduro, Gio Lourenço constructs a biographical itinerary where the body becomes an allegory of memory. Kuduro emerged in the 1990s in Luanda, amidst a civil war. The specific codes of this music/dance style reached Portugal through the bodies and cassette tapes (K7s) of those transitioning between these two countries. In adolescence, in the late 1990s, already living in Portugal, Gio Lourenço came into contact with this universe and became a kudurista, discovering a fractured body – his own – where memory reinvents itself in gesture. "Boca Fala Tropa" proposes an artistic territory displaced from a specific geography – the transit between Angola and Portugal – starting from the steps and codes of Kuduro to intersect elements of individual memory, and its inevitable fictions, with elements of collective memory. "Boca Fala Tropa" was considered one of the best shows of 2022 by journalist Claudia Galhós in the newspaper Expresso.

Gio Lourenço was born in 1987 in Luanda, Angola, and grew up in Portugal. He was a scholarship holder of the Centro Nacional de Cultura for training in "Dance and Performance" at c.e.m. – centro em movimento. He completed the Theater and Animation Course at CERCICA.

He is a resident actor at Teatro GRIOT, having participated as an actor in multiple theater productions. His performance "Preta" was presented at the Holland Pavilion at the 17th Venice Biennale. Also within the scope of the 17th Biennale, he developed the project "Memória Botânica" for the catalog "Exploratorium," in partnership with Sofia Berberan. He participated in the "Charging Change" project by visual artist Michelle Eistrup, presented at Documenta 2022.
